Baby’s First Shiner

My 9 month old son is obsessed with pulling himself up on everything and everyone. A few days ago, he set out to climb our wine rack and smiled when he accomplished his goal. He stood there for about ten minutes, clutching the side, carefully inspecting our random collection of merlots and cabs when he lost his balance and knocked his head on the way down. I swooped him up, his face scrunched in agony, and offered him the breast. As he suckled to calm himself down, I expressed a few drops from the unoccupied mammary and dabbed at the small cut under his left eye. My lactation consultant told me about the anti-bacterial quality of breast milk so I figured it would dress his first wound nicely. Throughout the day, I’ve been following up with a couple drops while he nurses and have noticed that it’s healing beautifully. Forget the Purell and bring on the breast milk!
