Why Use Silicone Nipples?

With all the latest controversy on baby-bottle plastic safety, you may be wondering about the safety of the materials used for bottle nipples. Hopefully, this article will shed some light on the matter. Basically, bottle nipples are usually made of either latex or silicone. Latex is the more traditional material and many babies take to latex nipples more than other materials because they ‘feel’ more natural. More recently silicone has been used for baby products including nipples. While latex does not contain BPA, experts say it can break down over time, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Additionally, latex can also leach carcinogens, called nitrosamines, which can cause allergic reactions or worse. When choosing silicone, it is recommended to look for ‘medical grade’ silicone, as it is manufactured according to stricter regulations.

According to Silikids, a company who are manufactures silicone baby products including bottles & nipples, silicone is the better choice for the following reasons:

  • Silicone is hygienic and hypoallergenic. Its rubber like material is safe, durable and pliable; there are no open pores to harbor bacteria.
  • Silicone is easy to use and to clean. Microwave or freezer safe/dishwasher and washer & dryer friendly.
  • Silicone does not fade or scratch.
  • Silicone is extreme temperature resistant.

More info from Silikids can be found here.

Because of the safety and ease of use of silicone, I have also looked for cooking products made with it. Items such as vegetable steamers, measuring cups and spatulas are readily available.

The bottom line, whatever is put in your baby’s mouth should be scrutinized for safety. Given the many options in baby product materials, there usually is a safer alternative available.
