Relactation

There are many reasons why one’s milk supply can become lowered. Sometimes when there is difficulty breastfeeding, or baby is not latching correctly, and supplementation is necessary, milk supply can become affected. For some women, a reduction in milk supply comes when they go back to work, for others, when they start their periods. (This was the case for me). I was pretty upset when this happened, so I looked into ways to increase my milk supply, also known as “relactation.” According to Lact-Aid.com, “‘relactation’ is either rebuilding a very low milk supply or, in some cases, inducing lactation after it has completely stopped, in order to resume the nursing relationship.” Here is what worked for me:

1) Increase drinking water supply: I literally kept a bottle or glass of water with me at all times, and most definitely when I was nursing.

2) More nursing sessions: I brought baby to the breast a lot more than usual, between feedings. Needless to say, we did not leave the house much in those few days.

3) Fenugreek Supplements: Popping three of these pills per day seemed to help boost my milk supply.

It is also suggested that if you pump more between feedings this can help as well.
